How long ago was the Sadako statue in Hiroshima was built?
49 years ago. It was built in 1958.

Who built the statue and how long did it take to build?
Sadako's classmates formed a committee when they were 12 years old. They started collecting money through publishing Kokeshi, a book about the memory of Sadako. They also wrote letters to school principals all over Japan. Children started the campaign right after her death in 1955. It took 3 years to complete the project.

Who started the Sadako Peace Club?
Michiko I. Pumpian, the award winning children's songwriter and singer, composed the song "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" and formed a children's peace choir in 1995. She started the peace club immediately following that.

Are Sadako's Parents alive?
Sadako’s father just passed away in February 2003 at 87 years old.
Her mother died in December 1998 at 80 years old.

Have you met Sadako's parents?
Michiko met Sadako's father when she went to Hiroshima, Japan in 1995. Michiko said that Sadako's father was really nice. Sadako's father wanted to share his thoughts with children from all over the world to say that Sadako was the luckiest child because she was loved by so many people. He also said that it is important to remember that she wasn't the only one that died because of the bomb, so many other children died because of the bomb.

Who built the statue of Sadako in Seattle and When?
Peace Activist, Dr. Floyd Schmoe, who was awarded a peace prize in Japan in 1988. He used the award money to clear a plot of land and build the statue in Seattle. He was 93 and took 3 years to complete the peace park in 1990.
